Tour Of Scioto River Valley Bike Ride

What's my Mood Today? - I Feel Positive!

Best known as TOSRV, the Tour of the Scioto River Valley is a classic American bike tour beloved by cycling enthusiasts. Started in 1962, this 200+ mile tour occurs annually on the 3rd weekend in September, taking riders from Columbus to Portsmouth and back, regardless of weather conditions.

Although the terrain is mostly even, TOSRV is not suitable for casual cyclists. Even completing just half the journey to Portsmouth requires endurance, as the 100+ mile stretch can be challenging for untrained legs. Around the 50-mile mark, riders encounter steep climbs, although the route avoids some of the more daunting hills of southern Ohio.

TOSRV is a road tour, meaning cyclists share the road with vehicles. While many motorists are considerate, some have limited patience for delays. The route primarily consists of two-lane roads with no passing zones, leading to potential frustrations and risky driving decisions. Safety is paramount: fatalities have occurred, including a tragic incident in 2008. Riders must remain vigilant, follow the rules, and stay aware of their surroundings, especially in adverse weather conditions.

Instead of starting at the orginal starting point of the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, cyclists heading south start from Brew Dogs in Canal Winchester. Originally following SR 104 on the Scioto River’s west side, increased traffic has shifted the route to the river’s east side into Circleville, where it then crosses the river and ends in 3 Bridges Park.
